FRANKLIN, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire man was killed after he and state troopers shot at each other during a standoff at a home early Monday that triggered a shelter-in-place order in the immediate area, the state attorney general's office said. Members of the New Hampshire State Police SWAT Team were directed to a home in Franklin after a woman in apartment in the home said a man across the hall had tried to smash through her front door on Sunday night. Police saw her door had been shot at. She was evacuated.

Police tried to make contact with the man. They heard gunshots come from his apartment and later saw a fire inside his residence and black smoke coming from the windows. At that point the man exchanged gunfire with troopers, the attorney general's office said. Two SWAT team members discharged their guns. The shelter-in-place order was issued overnight for residents in the area of Central and West Bow streets. The order has since been lifted, the office said.

The man was found just outside the home near a rear first-floor window. Life-saving measures were attempted, but he died at the scene. His identity has been withheld pending notification of family, the attorney general's office said.

The names of the SWAT team members who shot at the man were not released.

No police officers were hurt and there is no threat to the public, the office said.
