Annual blood drive in Norwich

I would like to take this opportunity to invite all blood donors to Tracy Hall in Norwich 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5. The blood drive is part of the 19 Days of Norwich celebration. It is dedicated to my son, Daniel Somerville. Daniel was 14 when he was diagnosed with cancer. He received many blood transfusions, which gave him and our family more time and improved the quality of his life. Dan lost his battle on Dec. 2, 1993 at the age of 15.

Since 1996, this drive has collected more than 5,000 pints of life-saving blood. We truly appreciate all the donors who have participated over the past 26 years. Many of you have given at most of the drives. Donors can make appointments by logging onto redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-733-2767.

We know there are many organizations worthy of your time and money, especially now. Please remember, money cannot buy blood. It can only come from dedicated volunteers willing to give their time to give the gift of life. There is always a need and donated blood can, and does, save lives.

Thank you for your support in honoring the Norwich Community and Daniel’s memory. We are thankful that Daniel has not been forgotten, and that his life continues to make a difference, even though he is in heaven.

Trump endangers
America’s democracy

Trump has created a house of cards, and he is the joker! This man has egregiously permeated the Republican Party with his toxic disposition. He has fractured and greatly compromised the United States, and its aspiration to nurture a sound and just democracy. Trump’s display of ignorant arrogance has emboldened the likes of Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un and other autocrats obsessed with power and dominance. All are relentlessly driven in an attempt to satiate their own boundless greed.

I choose to imagine the U.S. electorate having refined its intellect to a level where it refuses to defer to the likes of Trump. Trump’s clownish body language, and his vacant, caustic verbiage should be enough to spur the electorate to take a definitive stance.

Our government should use every weapon that is available in its judicial arsenal to bring this troglodyte down before his corrosive temperament vanquishes our democracy. Is there anything in Trump’s sphere of influence that he has not managed to sully ?! Our representatives should not dabble in diatribes, while Trump enacts his endless ploys.

The world is skeptically watching us haggle, while our democracy hangs in the balance !
