Grafton — Fire gutted an automotive shop off Hardy Hill Road in Grafton early Thursday morning.

Grafton Fire Chief John Babiarz said his crew was toned out to a fire around 6 a.m. and found Johnson Lane Automotive “fully engulfed” in flames.

“I could see the flames shooting out of the front where the garage door was,” Babiarz said Thursday evening. “It was an all metal building, so the fire was contained inside. It was like coming to a wood stove that had the door wide open. The heat was intense.”

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.

The shop, owned by Arthur Edmiston, was a total loss.

The State Fire Marshall’s office is investigating. Babiarz said the fire did not appear to be suspicious.

Edmiston told WMUR he didn’t have insurance and lost a lifetime worth of tools and other equipment in the fire.
