CHELSEA — A Newbury, Vt., man will spend 60 days in prison after pleading guilty in connection with a 2021 drunk driving crash in Fairlee that severely injured one of his passengers.

Jake St. Martin, 31, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident on June 7 in Orange County Superior Court, according to court records.

He was sentenced to one to five years in prison on the DUI charge and one to three years on the leaving the scene charge.

The sentences run concurrently, and all but 60 days were suspended. He will be on probation for five years.

St. Martin crashed his truck with three passengers inside into a tree near the intersection of Lake Morey and Redmond roads in the early morning hours of May 16, 2021, after trying to elude a Vermont State Police trooper.

The chase started when St. Martin nearly ran the police vehicle off the road on Maurice Roberts Memorial Highway, according to court documents.

St. Martin attempted to flee on foot from the crash scene but the trooper found him hiding behind a nearby house and took him into custody at gunpoint, according to the police affidavit.

One of the three passengers, a 25-year-old woman, was found unresponsive at the scene and taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon where she was listed in critical condition.
