South Strafford — A meeting scheduled for tonight about the Elizabeth Mine cleanup has been postponed due to lingering power outages in the area following this week’s snowstorm.

The Environmental Protection Agency was set to update the public on activities at the Superfund site during a meeting at Barrett Hall.

The site operated as a copper mine from the early 1800s until 1958. It was declared a Superfund site in 2001 because the acidic and metal-laden runoff from the mine was contaminating nearby waterways. Crews blasted rock at the site over the summer to help fill pit lakes that formed in the mine cuts.

An EPA spokeswoman said the meeting will be rescheduled, but a date has not been set.
