Dean Walton Osgood

Bradford, Vt. — Dean Walton Osgood, son of Charles Walton Osgood and Alzada Margaret Allen of Bradford, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, May 6, 2018. Dean, born December 9, 1935, was surrounded by loved ones during his final moments.

He was raised in Bradford and graduated from Bradford Academy where he met and courted his future wife, Joan Audrey Mellin, of Piermont, N.H. Dean and Joan attended the University of New Hampshire where Dean graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. On Sept. 9, 1956, Dean and Joan were wed at the Piermont Congregational Church across from her family home. While at Sprague Electric in North Adams, Mass., Dean designed electronic navigation controls for the NASA Polaris missile program. In 1971, Dean moved his wife and five children to the Mellin family home in Piermont, where he worked as plant engineer for Cone Blanchard in Windsor, Vt. In 1994 Dean started his own engineering consulting firm where he designed special projects until he retired.

Dean loved music, public service, and giving back to the community. He sang baritone and directed the choir at Piermont Congregational Church and Bradford Congregational Church. Dean and Joan traveled the world with the North Country Chorus. Dean played trombone for the Lyme Towne Band, a traditional brass ensemble, and Sweet Jamm, a jazz combo which performed swing music from the 1920’s, 1930’s, and 1940’s.  Dean spent several years on the Piermont School Board and as a Piermont Town Selectman. He touched the lives of everyone he encountered, from the very old to the very young.  

Dean is predeceased by his parents, Walt and Zip; his sister, Peg; and his granddaughter, Maleah. Dean is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Richard Osgood and wife, Zibute of Cincinnati, Ohio, Wendy Osgood Soucy and husband, Dave of Hamilton, N.Y., Chris Osgood of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mark Osgood and wife, Lisa of Greeley, Colo., Heidi Osgood-Metcalf and husband, Asa of Piermont; grandchildren, Nicholas and Brennan Osgood, Samuel Soucy, Jason and Audrey Osgood, Carly Osgood Medina and husband James; and great-grandchildren, Deirdre, Charlie, Eloise, Liliana, Aiden Osgood, and Melody and Luna Medina. Dean is also survived by his brother, Karl Osgood.  

The family will observe a private burial. There will be a public celebration of life planned for Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17.
