Hosts Break Carnival Hex

Saturday, February 10, 2018

Hanover — Dartmouth’s Katharine Ogden and Lauren Jortberg so enjoyed chasing each other around Oak Hill on Friday, they repeated it on Saturday to lead the Big Green to the Dartmouth Winter Carnival title, its first in eight years.

Ogden and Jortberg finished 1-2 for the second straight day to help the Big Green to a solid overall victory. Ogden claimed the women’s five-kilometer freestyle for her second victory in as many days, winning in 14 minutes, 1.4 seconds, with Jortberg about 13 seconds behind.

Dartmouth placed runners-up in the men’s 10K freestyle and in slalom action at the Dartmouth Skiway as well. The combination of results led to a carnival-best 1,019 team points, 99 better than second-place Vermont.

The Big Green has now won three of the East’s five carnivals this winter, with the Catamounts claiming the other two.

Colby’s Zane Fields, the Woodstock Union High School graduate, earned his fourth skate race win of the winter, taking the men’s freestyle in 25:59.7. Dartmouth’s Callan Deline took second in 26:13.8, and teammates Adam Glueck, of Hanover, and Gavin McEwen were 5-6 to complete Dartmouth’s day at Oak Hill.

Tanguy Nef was second for Dartmouth in the men’s slalom (1:42.70), behind only UVM’s Sandy Vietze (1:42.57). Brian McLaughlin and David Domonoske were 5-6 for the Big Green.

Alexa Dlouhy, Foreste Peterson and Stephanie Currie were 3-4-6 for Dartmouth in the women’s slalom. UVM took the top two slots behind winner Paula Moltzan (1:46.79) and runner-up Francesca English.

The carnival schedule continues at Williams College later this week.

Team scores (top five): Dartmouth 1,019, Vermont 920, Middlebury 699, New Hampshire 599, Colby 527.
