Hanover — A 19-year-old New Hampshire man is in stable condition after being shot once on a town street near the Dartmouth College campus, Hanover police said Saturday morning.

Police responded around 9:45 p.m. Friday and found the victim on the ground on School Street near the Christian Science Reading Room and West Wheelock Street, about a block from the Dartmouth Green, authorities said.

The shooting sparked a shelter-in-place order on the Dartmouth campus and a lockdown of downtown Hanover restaurants that were lifted about 12:35 a.m.

The victim was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center where he is in stable condition, according to a news release from Hanover Police.

Police Capt. Mark Bodanza said authorities are investigating whether the teen, who he said was from New Hampshire but outside the Upper Valley, was shot by someone who then drove from the scene.

“That’s the potential that we are looking into,” Bodanza said around 7:30 Saturday morning. “We’re assessing (the risk to public safety) but we are not on high alert at this point.”

The teen was visiting Hanover with other people, he said.

The shooting and shelter-in-place warning prompted a heavy police response from surrounding communities, as well as reports of other gunshots around Hanover.

“We responded to several calls throughout Hanover, some that were on Dartmouth property, for reports of something that sounded like gunshots,” Bodanza said.

“We only have evidence of one,” he said.

“This incident is in the early stages of investigation and is ongoing. Hanover Police is requesting that anyone in the area of School Street, West Wheelock Street and Allen Street that may have heard or seen anything, including vehicles coming and going, to contact us at 603-643-2222,” police said in a news release.

The widespread police response included “multiple calls reporting gunshots” around 11:15 p.m. about four miles south of Hanover in West Lebanon, in the area of North Main Street and Fountain Way, Lebanon police said. Police there asked residents with any information or who may have seen a suspicious vehicle or individuals to call Lebanon police at 603-448-1212.

In a separate news release, Lebanon police said that a police sergeant spotted a “suspicious vehicle” parked in the lot of Boston Lot Lake on Route 10 in West Lebanon 10 minutes later, and that when he attempted to investigate, the vehicle drove north “and attempted to evade the officer.”

The 2010 Ford Fusion later crashed on Oak Ridge Road after a brief pursuit, police said, and a 17-year-old male and 22-year-old man were taken into custody.

“Neither suspect was injured in the crash. The Lebanon Police Department is continuing to investigate the matter and will release additional information when appropriate,” police said.
