Town Meeting preview: Gift to relocate town library before Cornish voters

Articles of note: One article on the school warrant asks whether voters support long-term tuition agreements between the Cornish School District and the Hartford, Windsor and Claremont school districts. One article on the town warrant asks whether the town will accept the Cornish General Store as a gift for use as a library and community center. Three articles on the town warrant ask whether voters will support changes to the zoning ordinance; one would lift the limit on the size of accessory dwelling units; another would add bonding and insurance requirements; and the last would allow the zoning board to set application fees.

Contested races: Michael Belanger and Jason Bourne are vying for a three-year term on the Selectboard.

Budgets and spending articles: The proposed school budget is $5.08 million, which includes $4.8 million for the general fund, $112,000 for the school lunch fund and $144,000 for the federal projects fund. Last year, voters approved $4.6 million for the general fund. The proposed town budget is $640,000. The proposed highway budget is $759,000. The total of $1.4 million is up slightly from last year’s $1.3 million.

When, where and how to vote: Cornish is scheduled to hold its school meeting on Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. at the Cornish Elementary School gym. Officers will be elected by ballot and polls will be open from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Town Meeting ballot voting on officers and zoning changes on Tuesday, March 14 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. in the Cornish Elementary School gym. The town is scheduled to hold a deliberative session on Saturday, March 18 at 10 a.m. also at the school gym.
