Cora Vail Brooks

Montpelier, Vt. — Cora Vail Brooks was born in New York, N.Y. on April 9, 1941, to Tom and Anita Brooks. She died on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, of natural causes. She grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson, attended Hastings High School and then Sarah Lawrence College, where she received her B.A.

Cora taught young children and co-founded a cooperative nursery school.

She taught writing at several colleges including Wheaton College, Goddard College and Lesley University. She also taught and substituted at local schools, tutored children with special needs and co-founded two organizations serving battered women.

She wrote collections of poetry and fiction, many of which were published, as well as several plays, one of which was produced off-Broadway in New York City.

She loved reading, painting, writing, music and walking in the woods. She is survived by her sister Toni Brooks-Floyd, her brother Josh Brooks, her daughter Oona Metz, her son Luke Metz and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Capitol City Grange located at 6612 Route 12 (Northfield St.) in Berlin, Vt.
