CLAREMONT — Motorists should expect delays at the intersection of North and Main streets as a long-planned reconstruction project begins on Tuesday.

From Tuesday to Friday, North Street will be closed between Elm and Main streets from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. while large trees within the project area are removed.

In the coming weeks, drainage and water line improvements on Main Street will be completed as part of the $6.8 million project that has been in the planning stages for more than 15 years.

After this week, traffic impacts will include lane closures and one-way alternating traffic during the day on North and Main streets, but at least one lane will always be open during construction, the city said in a news release.

The project — which is funded 80% by the federal government with the city paying 20%, or about $1.4 million — involves reconfiguring the intersection and reconstructing, realigning and widening about 5,200 feet of the intersection approaches on both North and Main streets. Additionally there will be utility adjustments, a new water line, drainage improvements and a culvert replacement.

BUR Construction, of Newport, is the prime contractor overseeing the project, which is scheduled to be completed in November 2025.
