WEST LEBANON — Products containing dry-cured pork that are sold at Upper Valley grocery stores are among those that have been recalled due to a nationwide Salmonella outbreak.
The meat, called Coppa, is produced by Fratelli Beretta, and is sold at Shaw’s, Walmart, Hannaford and Market Basket, according to a news release from the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. It is often included in antipasto alongside other Italian meats. One person in New Hampshire has had an illness linked to the meat so far.
“As Salmonella bacteria can cause serious illness, it is best to throw out any potentially contaminated food rather than risk infection,” Iain Watt, interim health and human services director, said in a news release.
Salmonella infections can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, which typically appear 12 to 72 hours after exposure. Illnesses can last from four to seven days and most people can get through it without having to seek treatment.
“However, in some cases, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized,” according to the release. “In these cases, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and other places in the body and can cause death unless the patient is treated promptly with antibiotics.”
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are leading an investigation into the outbreak, along with assistance from state agencies, according to the DHHS release. Nationally, as of Feb. 15, there have been 87 reported illnesses, including 18 hospitalizations in 30 states, according to the CDC.
Six products sold by Shaw’s, which has locations in West Lebanon, Newport, Randolph and Springfield, Vt., can be returned for full refunds. Customers who purchased Dietz & Watson Gourmet Charcuterie Sampler Bag, Entertaining Charcuterie Sampler Bag and Party Platter Charcuterie Sampler Bag with a sell by date of Feb. 23 can return it to their area Shaw’s for a refund.
