NEWPORT — A 34-year-old Claremont woman who shot a woman in the leg during a melee — which interrupted the swearing-in ceremony of the city’s new police chief as officers dashed out to respond to the scene last summer — has pleaded guilty to a charge of second degree assault and received a suspended sentence.

Samantha McGlyn was sentenced from three to seven years in prison, all suspended for five years pending conditions, on Aug. 8 in Sullivan County Superior Court, according to New Hampshire state court records. Prosecutors dropped five other charges against McGlyn and reduced the charge to which she pleaded guilty from second degree assault with a weapon, records show.

The July 29, 2022 incident began when a 19-year-old man attempted to enter McGlyn’s residence on Pearl Street to retrieve a bicycle and was hit on the head with a blunt object by McGlyn’s daughter, according to police. In the ensuing commotion that spilled out onto the street, McGlyn confronted and shot a 22-year-old woman who had accompanied the man who entered McGlyn’s residence, police said.

McGlyn’s court-ordered conditions include remaining on good behavior, engaging in counseling, paying restitution and having no contact with the shooting victim.

She was also placed on probation for five years, meaning that if she violates any of the terms during that time the underlying sentence can be imposed.
