NEWPORT — A 34-year-old Claremont woman who shot a woman in the leg during a confrontation outside her home on Pearl Street last summer — and interrupted police chief’s swearing-in ceremony when police were called out to respond to the incident — filed notice on Thursday that she intends to plead guilty to second-degree assault and will receive a suspended prison sentence.

Samantha McGlyn will plead guilty to an amended single count of second-degree assault, down from the initial six charges she faced, including first-degree assault with a weapon. She will receive a three- to seven-year sentence in state prison, all suspended for five years dependent on good behavior and restitution, as well as five years probation, according to the agreement filed in Sullivan County Superior Court on Thursday.

McGlyn used a handgun to shoot a woman in the leg last August during a confrontation that erupted after the victim drove a man to McGlyn’s residence, where he attempted to retrieve a bike and where witnesses said he was holding a knife, according to police.

The incident, which also involved the man being hit on the head with a pipe by a member of McGlyn’s household, interrupted the swearing-in ceremony of new Claremont Police Chief Brent Wilmot as officers were called out en masse to respond to the scene.

McGlyn’s plea and sentencing hearing where she will formally enter her guilty plea and be sentenced is scheduled for Aug. 8.

An attorney for McGlyn did not respond immediately Thursday to a message seeking comment.
