Evelyn Cormier is one step closer to becoming the next American Idol.

The 19-year-old singer, who grew up in Claremont and lives there with her husband, advanced to “Hollywood Week” during her audition in front of judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, which aired on Sunday night.

Exchanging wide-eyed looks as Cormier performed Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game, the judges all gave Cormier high praise before unanimously voting to send her to the next round of auditions.

“Literally, one of my favorite voices I’ve heard in my life,” said Perry, who, like Cormier, got her start singing in church.

“You have a sound that’s yours,” said Richie. “I love the air.”

Cormier is one of two aspring “Idols” from New Hampshire. Kay Kay Alexis of Nashua also made the cut. The 18-year-old singer competed in last year’s season but was eliminated prior to the finals.

“Hollywood Week” begins airing on Sunday night. The pool of contestants will be narrowed each week in taped shows airing over the next several weeks. Live shows, with audiences voting to determine who moves forward, are slated for April 21 through May 20.
