NEWPORT — A 40-year-old Claremont man has told the court that he intends to plead guilty to robbing a Claremont gas station and convenience store earlier this year and will serve at least two years in prison.

James Oberfeldt has agreed to plead guilty to the charge of robbery, according to a notice of intent to plead guilty filed in Sullivan County Superior Court on Oct. 19, according to court records.

Oberfeldt, who has been detained in Sullivan County House of Corrections, was initially charged with armed robbery, falsifying evidence and theft by unauthorized taking for allegedly brandishing a kitchen knife during a robbery of the Mobil gas station and convenience store on Pleasant Street in the early morning hours of April 30, police reported at the time.

Under the plea agreement, Oberfeldt has agreed to plead guilty to robbery and to serve a minimum of four years to a maximum of eight years in state prison. Two years of the minimum sentence and six years of the maximum have been suspended for 10 years conditioned upon his enrollment in the Department of Corrections’ substance abuse treatment program.

In addition, Oberfeldt has also agreed to plead guilty to possession of methamphetamine in relation to a separate offense in 2022. For that charge, under the plea agreement, he will receive a consecutive 3½- to 7-year sentence, all suspended for 10 years.

A plea and sentencing hearing is scheduled in Sullivan Superior Court in Newport on Nov. 2.
