CLAREMONT — At the request of former City Manager Yoshi Manale, the City Council canceled a public hearing on his termination that had been scheduled for Tuesday evening.
Mayor Dale Girard said Manale contacted him late Monday to cancel the public hearing that was scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday in city council chambers.
Manale said he decided against his requested public hearing because it would not be the right step for the city.
“While I was disappointed in the Council’s approach to my removal, I understand and accept their decision to move in a different direction,” Manale said in an email Tuesday. “… My priority has always been to serve the best interests of Claremont, and I believe that stepping aside without further contention is the right thing to do for the city’s continued progress.”
The City Council fired Manale in a 9-0 vote in late April.
In a statement on the decision at the time, the council cited honesty, lack of information in council packets, lack of follow-up communication with the council, and lack of departmental control and accountability as reasons for terminating Manale, who the city hired in October 2022.
It was “an honor and privilege” to serve Claremont, Manale said in his email.
He also noted some accomplishments during his two and half years in Claremont, including securing $3 million in federal grants, attracting new businesses and investment, Washington Street paving, and pickleball and new tennis courts.

“Claremont is on a promising path, and I wish the Mayor, Council, city staff, and residents continued success in the years ahead,” Manale said.
Shortly before coming to Claremont, Manale had resigned from the position of town manager in Brattleboro, Vt., which he had held for only about five months.
Manale faced significant community backlash in Brattleboro after a controversy involving the town’s ambulance contract. The Brattleboro Reformer reported at the time that the backlash included a package containing feces that was mailed to Manale’s office.
