Claremont — A Proctor, Vt., man was arraigned in court on Thursday on several felonies after leading police on a chase from Newport to Claremont the previous day.

According to Claremont police, the incident started when reports were received of a black Ford F-150 pickup driving erratically on Main Street in Claremont.

Soon after, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as 40-year-old Richard Duncan, nearly struck a firefighter when he allegedly sped through an unrelated accident scene on Washington Street just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Duncan was spotted on Main Street in Newport a short time later but when police tried to stop him, he sped away on John Stark Highway toward Claremont.

Police said Duncan went off the road on Washington Street and fled on foot, but was apprehended by state police.

Duncan is charged with three counts of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, one count of possession of controlled drugs with intent to sell and one count of being an armed career criminal.

The case remains under investigation.
