Chester R. “Chet” McLam

Topsham, Vt. — Chester R. “Chet” McLam of Harts Road passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at his home following a period of declining health. He was 97.

Born on July 11, 1920, in Topsham, he was the son of Norman W. and Myrtle (Blood) McLam.

Chester attended Topsham Graded School and was a graduate of Groton High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1944.

On July 20, 1945, he married Freda Dexter. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage until her passing on Oct. 6, 2015. He has left us but he has gone to join his wife who he missed dearly.

Chet and Freda ran a chicken farm for many years and he retired as a custodian from Spaulding Graded School in Barre, Vt.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Chet was gifted with lifelong excellent health. He enjoyed deer hunting and got his last deer at age 93. He also enjoyed snowmobiling and was an active member of the Topsham Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club for many years and cut his own firewood into his 80’s.

He was a longtime member of the Topsham United Presbyterian Church and volunteered at church suppers and other various activities of the church.

He leaves a son, Glen McLam and wife, Sherry of Topsham; two daughters, Lois Kelty and husband, Russell of East Barre, Vt. and Joy Appleton and companion, Jerry Provost of East Corinth; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brother, Alfred McLam and wife, Eunice of East Corinth; sister-in-law, Evelyn Moulton of Westfield, Mass.; as well as many nieces & nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, he is predeceased by son, Terry McLam, grandson Lenny McLam, son-in-law Jim Appleton, brother Gordon and sisters Inis and Estelle.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at Topsham United Presbyterian Church and burial will follow at Topsham Cemetery. A reception will follow at the family home. Rev. Earl Brock will officiate. There are no calling hours.
