Kyle Janeczek, a second-year student at the Geisel School of Medicine who grew up in New Jersey, was found dead at his Route 5 home in Norwich on Oct. 16 after a welfare check.
Janeczek, 25, died of a “presumed arrhythmia” due to Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome, a rare condition that can cause a rapid heartbeat. Use of loperamide, medication used to counter diarrhea, contributed to his death, according to a copy of his death certificate obtained from the Vermont Department of Health.
The Food and Drug Administration in January 2018 moved to change the packaging and limit the number of doses in a box of loperamide, which is also known by the brand name Imodium, out of concerns that the drug was being abused. The FDA said it continued to receive reports about serious heart problems and deaths in people who took more than the recommended dose.
