CANAAN — A temporary bridge will be installed over Gristmill Hill Road near downtown Canaan.

In July, the Selectboard voted to close the town-owned bridge over the Indian River that connects to Route 4 near Dollar General. At its August meeting, the Selectboard decided to use funds from a New Hampshire Highway Block Grant to install and rent a temporary bridge. It will cost $18,000 to put in place over the current bridge and cost $1,000 per month to rent. The goal is to have it in place by the end of September, Selectboard Chairman Stephen Freese said.

The Gristmill Hill bridge, which is currently on the New Hampshire Department of Transportation’s “2022 Municipal Bridge Red List,” currently has a three-ton load limit. It is slated for replacement in 2026.
