CANAAN — In ballot voting on Tuesday, Canaan voters supported the adoption of an optional property tax exemption for solar energy systems, 303-211.

A similar proposal had failed last year.

Voters also approved a general fund budget of $4.64 million, which is up from the $4.3 million voters approved last year. They also approved a water and sewer budget of $248,000, which is to be raised through user fees.

Voters supported purchases of a new police cruiser ($45,000) and a mini-excavator ($89,000); but rejected an enclosed trailer for the Fire Department’s off-road utility vehicle ($25,000).

Canaan voters supported the adoption of a standard and optional veterans’ tax credit and an all-veterans’ tax credit as allowed under recent legislation, RSA 72:28 and RSA 72:28-b.

As adopted, both would be set at $200 per year that a person qualifies. It is set to go into effect April 1 and is estimated that it will increase the tax rate by 6 cents per $1,000 of property value or $11.50 for a home worth $200,000.

In municipal elections, voters elected Sadie Wells to the Selectboard for a three-year term. Wells had 430 votes to Eleanor J. Davis’ 59.

On the town’s budget committee, Salvatore Percia, Michael G. Riese and Michael Samson beat out Thomas Duplinsky and Mark Houston for three three-year seats.
