Articles of note: One article asks whether voters want to adopt a standard and optional veterans’ tax credit and an all veterans’ tax credit as allowed under recent legislation, RSA 72:28 and RSA 72:28-b. If adopted both would be set at $200 per year that an individual qualifies. It would go into effect April 1 and is estimated that it would increase the tax rate by 6 cents per $1,000 or $11.50 for a home worth $200,000. Another article asks whether voters will adopt an optional property tax exemption for solar energy systems.

Contested races: Sadie Wells and Eleanor J. Davis are facing off for a three-year seat on the Selectboard. Five people are running for three three-year seats on the town’s budget committee: Thomas Duplinsky, Mark Houston, Salvatore Percia, Michael G. Riese and Michael Samson.

Budgets and spending articles: The proposed general fund budget is $4.64 million, which is up from the $4.3 million voters approved last year. The proposed water and sewer budget is $248,000, which would be raised through user fees. Several equipment purchases are on Canaan’s warrant this year, including a new police cruiser ($45,000); a mini-excavator ($89,000); and an enclosed trailer for the Fire Department’s off-road utility vehicle ($25,000).

When, where and how to vote: Canaan is scheduled to hold its Town Meeting ballot voting on Tuesday, March 14 at the Canaan Fire Station, 62 NH Route 118, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
