Lyme, N.H. — Bruce G. Smith passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2017. He was born in Long Beach, Calif., a son of Caroline (Eastman) and Gordon Smith. He spent most of his childhood in Loudon, N.H.

After graduating from Pembroke HS, he joined the Navy. Stationed in Norfolk, Va., he served as a corpsman at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth. This led to a career in nursing. As of 1984, he was a Registered Nurse at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center; most recently in Same Day Surgery, where he received many letters from patients thanking him for his competent and compassionate care.

He met his wife, Lynn (Richmond), in nursing school. They were married Oct. 14, 1984, and settled in Lyme, that same year.

Bruce was a Renaissance man. He loved the outdoors – hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, hunting, skating, and xc skiing. He enjoyed working with stone, and built walls, inukshuks, and whimsical cairns. An avid reader, he taught himself plumbing and electricity and could fix almost anything. He made maple syrup, medicinal salves, and chocolate mousse. Most of all, he loved his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn; a son, Ian Smith and his wife, Jiyeon Yoon, and their son, Jivan, of Lyme; a daughter, Alaina Smith of Woodsville; brothers, Steve Smith (Jennie) and Neil Smith of N.H., and Andy Smith (Chris) of Oregon; sisters, Irene Smith of Calif. and Kathleen Sayers (Steve) of Idaho; brother-in-law, Del Richmond (Barbara) of Mass.; and numerous other beloved family.

A memorial service will be held in February. Memorial contributions may be made to Lyme FAST Squad, PO Box 126, Lyme, NH 03768 or to Friends of the Northern Rail Trail (FNRT), Box 206, Enfield, NH 03748.
