Town Meeting preview: Bethel voters to decide on retail sale of cannabis in town

Articles of note: In Australian ballot voting, voters will be asked whether they would like to allow retail sale of cannabis in town and whether to take out a $2.5 million bond to make capital improvements to the town’s water system. From the floor, voters will be asked whether to elect town officers by Australian ballot in the future.

Contested races: By ballot during the meeting, voters will be asked to elect two Selectboard members, one for a three-year term to succeed Paul Vallee; and the other for a two-year term to succeed Chris Jarvis.

Budgets and spending articles: From the floor, voters will be asked to approve a $2.66 million town operating budget, of which $2.16 million is slated to come from taxes. That is up from the $2.42 million budget approved last year, according to previous reporting. Voters will also be asked for $27,500 for the Bethel Library, $30,000 for the second phase of the town’s skate park and $26,350 for social service agencies, as well as $153,048 for the White River Valley Ambulance.

When, where and how to vote: Bethel is scheduled to hold its Town Meeting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7 in the gymnasium at the White River Unified Middle School, 273 Pleasant St. Polls at the middle school will be open for Australian ballot voting from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. that day.
