Hanover — Authorities on Wednesday released the name of the 18-year-old Massachusetts man who was seriously injured last weekend after being shot while walking with friends near Dartmouth College.

Grafton County Attorney Lara Saffo said the teen is Thomas Elliott. Police and prosecutors had only used his initials in court documents, but released the name after the Valley News asserted that it is a public record.

Elliott, a freshman at Providence College, and two other teens were visiting a Dartmouth College student when Elliot was shot in the lower back from a passing car on Friday night on School Street in downtown Hanover. All four appear to have attended Milton Academy in suburban Boston together.

Gage Young, a 22-year-old Lebanon resident, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault with a deadly weapon in the shooting and is being held without bail. Police have said the shooting appeared to be random, and that the driver of the car told police Young wanted to “scare” the pedestrians.
