Merle “Whitey” Stowell Gould

White River Jct., Vt. — Merle S. “Whitey” Stowell Gould, 83, died Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Jct.

He was born June 12, 1932, in Hanover, N.H., a son of Rea M. (Perry) and William Royal Gould. Whitey lived and attended school in Woodstock, Vt., and later at Kurn Hattin Homes in Westminster, Vt. He then attended Bigelow Junior High School in Newton, Mass., Newton-Wellesley High School and three years of ICS Correspondence School. He entered the US Army in 1952, serving in Japan as a Corpsman and in Graves Registration until his honorable discharge in 1954. After returning from his military service he began his 26-year career working for Mark E. Powers at Powers Furniture Store and Funeral Home in White River Jct. After the furniture store closed he began working at Blodgett Supply/Vermont Appliance also in White River Jct. until retiring in 1997.

Whitey was an avid skier in his youth, beginning at Gilbert’s Ski Tow on Route 12 and the ski jump across from the Golf Club House both in Woodstock. He also skied at Kurn Hattin Homes and worked at Bob Johnson’s Indoor Ski School in Newton, Mass. While in Japan with the army he was on the South West Command Ski Team skiing in the Japanese Alps and Hokkaido Japan, making champion in 1953. Upon his return from the service he helped to operate the Ski Tow in Norwich, Vt., and skied at Mt. Tom in Woodstock, Bromley Mountain Resort, Killington, Pico, Dartmouth Skiway and several other resorts.

For twelve years his family enjoyed a cabin cruiser on Lake Winnipesaukee, and since then have enjoyed four different motor homes. He and his wife also enjoyed riding motorcycles together. He was a past member of the National Boating Association, Gold Wing Riders Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans, all in White River Jct.

Mr. Gould was predeceased by his parents; stepmother, Bertha Gould; sister, Barbara Mendoza; brother, William R. Gould, Jr.; and stepbrothers James Pike and George Pike.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia R. Gould of White River Jct.; daughters Debbie Ann Haskins of Rochester, N.H., and Robin Marie Cantlin of Croydon, N.H.; granddaughters Nicole and Morgan Cantlin as well as many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., Thursday, March 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
