Hanover’s Ledyard Gallery opens an exhibition of art in an uncommon medium.
“Art in Wood: the White Mountains, Mt. Monadnock, and Acadia,” brings to the Howe Library marquetry by Peterborough, N.H., woodworker and artist Craig Altobello. The show opens Saturday and a reception is planned for 2 to 4 p.m. on June 8.
Marquetry involves rendering two dimensional images in wood inlay. Often it’s made in geometric patterns, or as the surface of a table or other furniture. Altobello has taken it further, creating images of the New England landscape that deploy the grain and color of wood to evoke broader forms.
Altobello is slated to demonstrate his work at the library at 2 p.m. on June 30. The show is on view through July 31.
