Catharine “Cate”  Ranney Stratton

Sunday, February 28, 2016
Windsor, Vt.—We celebrate the life and mourn the passing of our dear mother, sister, daughter and beloved friend, Cate Stratton. Cate, age 57, died unexpectedly and peacefully in her sleep in her home in Windsor, Vt. on Feb. 12.

She was born on Sept. 11, 1958 in Bogota, Colombia to Robert Draper Stratton and Carolyn Cushman Stratton of Hartland, Vt. and Block Island, R.I., Cate’s residences include Peru, Ecuador, N.Y., N..J., Thailand, Nigeria, Guatemala, the Philippines, and Honduras. That said, “home” for her was always Vermont and Block Island.

After graduating from Dana Hall and with a BS in Animal Husbandry from UVM, Cate served two terms in the Peace Corp in Honduras. With her husband at the time, Oscar Ruiz, she then worked for USAID, Partners For The Americas, ran the dairy operation of the third generation Ruiz farm in the village of Catacamas, and raised two magnificent boys, Lucas Ruiz, 28, currently of SLC, Utah and Willy Ruiz, 26, of Bozeman, Mont. In 1994, Cate and her boys moved back to Hartland, Vt. where she began a second career in sales and marketing for printing firms: Whitman, Imperial and most currently, RC Brayshaw and Co.

Those of you that know our dear Cate remember her for her strength, love, fierceness, temper, talents, and loyalty. Family and cherished friends were the most important thing to her and she had the ability to feed our hearts and souls with her talents in the kitchen. Cate was an excellent horseman, a fierce tennis player, a purist in her garden, at the local bar or any dinner table. There was no question that her greatest love was that of her two sons.

A service celebrating Cate was held on Feb. 21 in her home town of Windsor, Vt., attended by her entire surviving family and so many close friends.  Cate is survived by her parents who now reside at The Woodlands in Lebanon, N.H.; her brother Robert Pembroke Stratton and his family Sandra, Fia and Vin of Bangkok, Thailand and Block Island; and her sister Susan Stratton Pruitt and her family, Bill, Will and Jack, of Los Angeles.

Gallop free and fast through the heavens, Cate. Your significance to so many of us was and is astounding.
