Calendar Highlights: The Art of Quilling

Monday, February 08, 2016
West Lebanon — In 2006, Marianne Fassett was watching TV when she saw a quilling demonstration.

The Enfield resident was intrigued by the craft, which involves manipulating strips of paper into coils to create shapes. But there was no one local to teach her how it’s done.

“I’m self-taught because there’s no one around to teach me,” Fassett said during a demonstration at the annual Lebanon Art and Crafts Association show on Wednesday. “There’s only a handful of us Northern New Englanders who quill.”

She soon began teaching the art to others and has watched it grow throughout the region. She teaches workshops and also offers private instruction.

“Everybody works at it, learns the basics and then anything they make has their own stamp on it,” Fassett said.

While there are five primary coils, Fassett has come up with her own variations that she has added to her repertoire.

“My purpose originally was to spread the word and I think I’ve done that,” she said.

The Lebanon Art and Crafts Association show is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sunday; 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Saturday, through Dec. 24 at 66 Benning St. For more information, visit lebanonartandcrafts.org.
