LEBANON, N.H.— David Hurst Robinson, 89, of Lebanon died peacefully 26 Dec. 2015 at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital from effects of a stroke suffered three and a half weeks prior. Born 28 March 1926 to David Russell and Katharine Pettengill Robinson in Amsterdam, N.Y., he attended Amsterdam public schools and graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. as a member of the class of 1950. A descendant of three Revolutionary ancestors, he was a World War II veteran, having served in the US Navy between high school and college.

On 18 Feb. 1956, he married Elinor Janet (Jan) Welcke in Scarsdale, N.Y. After a skiing honeymoon in Europe, they settled in Mount Vernon, N.Y. Downhill skiing was a sport they continued to enjoy for many years.

He began his career with Mohawk Carpet Mills (later Mohasco Industries) in Amsterdam, later working in Chicago and New York City in sales and marketing. In 1968, he accepted a position with Albany Felt Company in Albany, N.Y. to develop a new line of indoor/outdoor carpet and moved with his family to Delmar, N.Y. He concluded his career as a Senior Account Executive with Pitney-Bowes in the newly-established Albany, N.Y. branch office.

Dave loved spending time with his family, especially at their vacation home at the North End of Virginia Beach, Va. Following retirement, he and Jan traveled extensively, visiting Alaska, Europe, Scandinavia, India, China, Australia, Thailand, Morocco, and Kenya, among others. In 2010, they moved to The Woodlands at Harvest Hill in Lebanon, N.H.

He was a fighter until the end, always maintaining a cheery outlook even in the face of adversity. When myopathy of the quadriceps stole his ability to walk unaided, he fought to maintain his independence using crutches and eventually a walker, eschewing a wheelchair for all but the longest excursons. He was a life-long singer and music lover, beginning as a boy soprano in the Episcopal church in his hometown. He was manager of the Glee Club while attending Union College, and a member of The Mendelssohn Club of Albany, N.Y. for over 40 years. In the Upper Valley, he enjoyed attending concerts by The Handel Society of Dartmouth College, Classicopia, Camerata New England, and others.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet W. Robinson of Lebanon, N.H.; one brother, John H. (Jack) Robinson and his wife Dorothy of Queensbury, N.Y.; sons David T. and his wife Bonnie Robinson of Lebanon, N.H., Christopher A. and his wife Kathleen Robinson of Collierville, Tenn., and Brian R. and his wife Claudia Williamson of Camden, Maine. He is also survived by grandchildren David B. Robinson of Portland, Ore.; Rebecca K. Robinson of Berkeley, Calif.; Bradley R. Robinson of Austin, Texas; Julie R. Haecker and her husband Eric of Cordova, Tenn.; Timothy H. Robinson of Nyack, N.Y.; Eliza B. and Tanner J. Robinson of Camden, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Rotary Foundation c/o Rotary Club of Lebanon, NH, PO Box 132, Lebanon NH 03766 or LISTEN Community Services (http://www.listencommunityservices.org/donate/) in his honor is suggested.
