Thayer Clark Paine

Canaan, N.H. — Thayer Paine of Canaan died on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at her home. She was born on Oct. 7, 1939, in New York City, the daughter of John Dudley and Elizabeth (Grant) Clark of Princeton, N.J.

Thayer graduated from St. Timothy’s School, Maryland in 1957 and from Smith College, BA, in 1961. She worked in New York City at EWA and later in a law office. In 1972, she achieved an MBA from Columbia University. In that year she married Lieutenant Commander Michael Paine, Royal Navy and moved to England.

Together they lived at various times in Plymouth, Devon and in the vicinity of Portsmouth, Hampshire, depending on the vagaries of life in the Royal Navy. On Michael’s retirement in 1999, they moved to Canaan where they renovated a house on Canaan Street.

Thayer is survived by her husband; brother, J. Dudley Clark of Canaan; sister, Linda Clark of Princeton, N.J.; 10 nephews & nieces; 23 grand and three great-grand nephews & nieces.

A Memorial Service will be held on June 20 in the Chapel, Cardigan Mountain School at 11 a.m. and followed by a reception.
