White River Growpro Opens

White River Junction — Kendall Smith and Stephanie Waterman have turned their passion for gardening into a business with the opening earlier this summer of White River Growpro.

Located on South Main Street, near Big Fatty’s BBQ and Elixir Restaurant, the couple said the store will fill a need in the area for a specialty gardening store.

“I always wanted to work for myself and with our gardening experience, this is a great opportunity,” Smith said.

He said the store has a lot of indoor growing supplies as well as the usual products for outdoor gardeners, soil and fertilizers, along with organic pesticides and fungicides.

“It has been great,” Smith said about the customer reaction since the July 1 opening. “There has been a ton of interest and we have had done good business.”

Smith, who is from Shelburne, Vt., and has background that includes working at a ski area and managing a hardware store, said the store’s indoor and hydroponic products range from the basic to the sophisticated.

“In this area, if you want to produce fruit, you have to get it started indoors,” Smith said.

Hydroponics, defined as the growing of plants in nutrient-enriched water with a fertilizer solution pumped through the system periodically, has several advantages, Smith said. It can be ideal for those without the outdoor space or good soil and is set up on timers that allows the owner to be away for an extended period of time without harm to the plants.

“Hydroponics is a fun way to go. Sort of like tinkering. There are fewer bugs, a lot more control, the weather is consistent so you don’t have the environmental stresses.”

Hydro systems or growing indoors allows for an earlier and later growing season, the husband-and-wife team said in a news release.

The store is open Tuesday through Saturday and is closed Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call 802-281-6186 or visit www.whiterivergrowpro.com.
