Letter: Coverage Should Reflect Religious Diversity

Monday, December 16, 2013
To the Editor:

I may miss reading an issue here or there, but I’m a regular subscriber to the Valley News. I’ve been pleased to see the articles you have been running related to religion and religious perspectives, but the pieces you have chosen focus overwhelmingly on Christians and Christian writers. Off-hand, I can recall only one or two articles related to Judaism and one related to Buddhist perspectives.

The United States is a religiously pluralistic nation now. Christians in our country live side-by-side with Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Baha’is, Jains, Zoroastrians, Pagans, and others. Communities of Muslims, Baha’is, Buddhists, Jews and Sikhs worship regularly in our immediate area. I urge you to broaden your coverage so that you more accurately reflect our national and local reality and help to broaden the perspectives of all of us readers. Please regularly run features related to non-Christian traditions. In the meantime, I encourage you and V alley News readers to have a look at the website for Harvard’s Pluralism Project, which documents the rich diversity of religious traditions and communities in the United States. ( Thank you!
