Hanover — Joe Steffen and Rob Edson picked up the victories on Saturday during the CHaD Hero Half Marathon and Ripcord 5K.
Steffen outraced a field of more than 650 runners over the 13.1-mile half marathon course through Hanover and Norwich. The 33-year-old’s time of 1 hour, 14 minutes, 26.39 seconds, edged Claremont’s Justin Montgomery, 37, by less than 14 seconds. Upper Valley Running Club competitor Devin Parker, 26, of Hanover, won the women’s division in 1:27:15.01.
Edson, 50, of Hanover, set the pace for a 5K field of more than 860, posting a winning time of 17 minutes, 58.84 seconds. Hanover’s Rob Edelstein, 22, came across the line second in 18:13.02, and New London’s Megan Call, 33, won the women’s division in 18:28.70.

Cox, Raynolds To Select Camp
White River Junction — Hartland’s Hannah Cox and Upper Valley Aquatic Club coach Dorsi Raynolds are in Colorado Springs, Colo., through the weekend to participate in USA Swimming’s National Select Camp, an invitation that came out of Cox’s performance in the 800-meter freestyle at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Irvine, Calif., in August.
USA Swimming invites 30 male and female swimmers to the camp each October. The camp includes a variety of seminars for both athletes and coaches on topics including post-race recovery, drug and supplement education, race analysis and nutrition, among others.
Cox, 16, is a sophomore at Kimball Union Academy.

Canaan Race Upcoming
Canaan — Mascoma Valley Parks and Recreation will get in the spirit of the Halloween season by hosting the Jack-o-Lantern 5K and Kids Trick or Trot 1K fun run on Oct. 26.
The run begins and ends at the Canaan Hall parking lot, with 5K runners heading up Orange Road and turning around at Tuttle Hill Road. There will be two water stops along the way and refreshements at the finish line. The cost for the run is $15 through Oct. 21 and $20 the day of the race. Walkers of a 3K route are invited to join as well, at $12 in advance and $15 on race day. The kids’ fun run is $7 in advance and $10 on race day.

Whale of a 5K
Enfield — The Upper Valley Snow Sports Foundation will put Whaleback season passes on the line when it hosts its first Whale of a 5K/Dash for a Pass race on Nov. 2.
The uphill run and hike will follow the contours of the mountain’s ski trails, with the course for the childrens division (ages 14 and younger) going halway up the mountain. Adult and youth race winners will receive a 2014 season pass to Whaleback, and each age division winner will get a Save the Whale T-shirt. All proceeds from the day will go toward the UVSSF, which is working toward keeping Whaleback’s trails open for the winter.
The Dash for a Pass race is $10, while the 5K is $20. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., races start at 10 a.m. and a barbecue will follow at 11 a.m. Email info@uvssf.org for more details.
Run for Pie
Grantham — Why focus on the meal? Eastman Recreation will eat dessert first by holding the Run for Pie 5K road race on Nov. 9.
The five-kilometer course will be along Eastman’s paved and dirt roads, while an associated two-mile walk will be held on a wooded trail along the west side of Eastman Pond. True to the race’s name, homemade pies will go to winners of the race.

Woodstock Learn-to-Play
Woodstock — Woodstock Youth Hockey will offer a free learn-to-play-hockey clinic for children on Saturday and Sunday at Union Arena.
The clinics, open to ages 4-16, will be staged on Saturday from 10:20-11:20 a.m. and Sunday from 9:10-10:10 a.m. Participants will need shin guards, elbow pads, heavy gloves (such as skiing or lacrosse) and some sort of helmet (bicycle or ski acceptable) to skate. Some equipment will be available, and WYH coaches will lead the clinics.
PW Major Elite Sweeps
Schenectady, n.y. — The Hanover Peewee Major Elite continued their early-season success with a pair of wins over the 01 AAA CP Dynamo Elite at Union College.
After spotting Dynamo a goal, the Wild rallied for a 3-1 win in the opener behind two goals from Matty Gardner, one from Will Laycock, assists from Elias Zinman and Sean Donahue and the goaltending of Nick Vosinek. Alexander Gates joined Gardner in the goal-scoring department in the second game, a 2-1 Hanover victory backstopped by goaltender Eliana Ray and blueliners Jack Clarner, Ben Booker, Sy Oberting and Aaron Damren.
Now 3-0 on the season, the Elite visit the Northern Cyclones in Hudson, N.H., this weekend to begin Granite State League play.
Twin Valley Learn-to-Skate
Meriden — The Twin Valley Youth Hockey Association will start its learn-to-skate and learn-to-play-hockey programs on Nov. 2 at Kimball Union Academy. The sessions will run every Saturday morning, from 9:15-10:15 a.m. The programs will continue through Feb. 22.

Broomball at UA
Woodstock — Union Arena will host a night of broomball and dodgeball on the ice on Saturday from 6:30-8 p.m.
All ages are welcome to take part in events requiring only a pair of sneakers and a love for fun. There is no charge to participate.
UA will also host its first Skate and Scare haunted house on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. Public skating is available for $2 with the purchase of a ticket to the haunted house.

EOC Hosting Match
Enfield — The Enfield Outing Club will host some friendly autumn competition with its first Harvest Match, an NRA-sanctioned target shooting competition, on Oct. 26.
Shooters of all ages are welcome to participate. The match will involve competition with .22-caliber rifles from three target-shooting positions. The cost to particiapte is $10 per person.

IAABO Referee Classes
White River Junction — Vermont Board 105 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials will hold a series of classes for aspiring referees beginning Oct. 28 at Hartford High School.
The classes will run on Monday and Thursday nights for four weeks, meeting 6:30-9 p.m. on each occasion. There is a cost to attend the seminars.

Fall Friday Hikes
Lebanon — The Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department has scheduled a series of Friday fall hikes for folks of all ages.
Each trip begins at Lebanon City Hall at 9 a.m. with transportation to that day’s trailhead, with a planned noon return. The schedule:
∎ Oct. 25: Two Rivers Conservation Area, West Lebanon (easy).
Participants are asked to bring snacks, water, a backpack (if necessary), properly layered clothing and hiking boots or sturdy sneakers. Each hike is free, but pre-registration is required. Call 603-448-5121 for more information.

Benefit Ping Pong Event
Lebanon — The Lebanon Assembly of God will host a fundraising ping pong tournament on Oct. 26 for the benefit of the Pregnancy Center of the Upper Valley.
The event will be held at the church, located at 45 Buckingham Place in Lebanon, starting at noon. Prizes will be available, including trophies for the tournament winners. Potential participants are asked to register online via the ping pong link at christianbrilliance.com by Oct. 17. The registration fee is $25 for the tournament along with a $5 hot dog lunch.
