Letter: Where the Blame Belongs

Thursday, January 09, 2014
To the Editor:

This is in response to Jack Gamble’s letter, which criticized those who celebrated the announced closing of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant (“Count Me Out of the Party,” Sept. 2).

Does Fukushima ring any bells? How about Chernobyl or Three Mile Island? How about the tons of toxic waste we are all stuck with for what essentially amounts to forever? Sorry you’ve lost your job, but it’s not the fault of Nina Swaim or anyone else who was gladdened by Vermont Yankee’s announced closing. It’s the fault of a failed idea. Nuclear power has never been safe and never will be. The world is moving toward safe, clean, sustainable energy, and nukes are not part of that equation. Good luck to you in your job hunt. I don’t have a job either, but I am going to the party.
