C. Everett Koop, Former U.S. Surgeon General, Dies at 96

C. Everett Koop, the former surgeon general who warned of the dangers of tobacco and also helped lead the early national discussion on AIDS, died today at his Hanover home. He was 96, had been ill for several months, and suffered kidney failure last Wednesday, an aide said.

Koop, a 1937 Dartmouth College graduate, founded the C. Everett Koop Institute in 1992 at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. See more information in Tuesday’s Valley News and www.vnews.com.
