STRAFFORD — The Alliance for Vermont Communities and the Vermont Land Trust are co-sponsoring meetings in Strafford and Sharon next week to give residents more information about proposed ownership of the Ashley Community Forest by the two towns.

The 256-acre parcel that straddles Sharon and Strafford was purchased in 2018 by the Alliance, with help from the land trust, to prevent its potential acquisition by David Hall, the Utah engineer who was proposing the so-called NewVistas development in the area.

The Ashley forest includes trails, timber and wildlife habitat, among other resources. The nonprofit Alliance is proposing to give the parcel to Strafford and Sharon pending Special Town Meeting votes in late spring.

The information sessions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barrett Hall in Strafford and at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the library at Sharon Elementary School.
