Bass fishing stood to be the varsity sport most adversely affected in Vermont had the state not approved interscholastic competition last week.

The season consists of just two events, one of which — the VPA Classic — was set for Sept. 19 but canceled by the coronavirus pandemic. The state championship is Oct. 3 in South Hero. Hartford High will be looking to back up last year’s successes, when the Hurricanes won a Twin State title to earn an invitation to a national championship that was ultimately derailed by the pandemic.

The NHIAA held its qualifying tournament last week. The state tournament is Oct. 3 on Wentworth Lake in Wolfeboro; Mascoma’s club team will also participate in the competition.
