Windsor Hosts Boxing Card Next Week

Windsor — After a five-year hiatus from boxing in his hometown, three-time New England Golden Gloves champion Chris Gilbert will headline a card of professional and amateur bouts on March 23 at the Windsor Recreation Center.

Gilbert, who turned pro in 2011 after reaching the quarterfinals of the national Golden Gloves tournament, will take a 6-0 record with five knockouts into a six-round welterweight matchup with Luis Viramontes, of Worcester, Mass., in the feature event. Viramontes enters with a pro mark of 3-1-1.

Gilbert is also director of the Windsor Boxing Club, which will receive proceeds from the card. “It’s been a long time, and I’m really looking forward to it,” Gilbert said in a news release. “I think it will be a great show, and I hope people will turn out to see it.”

At least two other professional bouts are scheduled for the card. Boston’s Nick Cyr will make his heavyweight debut against a planned opponent from New York, while middleweight Russell Lamour, of Portland, Maine, will take a 2-0 record into a meeting with a competitor from Massachusetts. Another six amateur bouts involving boxers from New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts.

Tickets for the show are $20 for general admission, $30 for ringside and $40 for front row. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling 802-291-4151.
