Cougars Drop Tennis Debut

West Swanzey, n.h. — Between wind, cold and a game opponent, the Kearsarge High boys tennis team saw its season get off to a rough start yesterday.

In a match postponed by a day by weather, Monadnock controlled the Cougars for an 8-1 victory at Monadnock Regional High School. Kearsarge (0-1) picked up its lone point at sixth singles, with Jack Van Etten shutting out the Huskies’ Arnold Fish, 8-0.

Kearsarge’s only other close call came at third singles, where Tim Berube dropped a 9-8 decision to Brandon Waters, with the Monadnock No. 3 winning the tiebreaker 9-7.

“It was a lot of lopsided scores, but considering the conditions — windy, third, just the third time I’ve seen some of these kids with racquets — the score didn’t indicate the positive things we were doing,” Kearsarge coach Peter Bianchi said.

The Cougars are back in action today, hosting Wilton-Lyndeborough.
