Area Golfers Miss Cut at Am

Brookline, Mass. — Improved second rounds weren’t enough to send Hanover’s Peter Williamson and Grantham’s Even Russell into match play at the United States Amateur golf championship on Tuesday.

After an opening 76 at The Country Club on Monday, Russell — the Eastman Golf Links member and University of Hartford sophomore — posted an even-par 70 at Charles River Country Club in Newton, Mass., on Tuesday. Having compiled a 74 at TCC on Monday, Williamson rebounded with a 1-over 71 at Charles River.

It wasn’t enough. Russell missed the match-play cut by two strokes. Williamson flirted with making a playoff for the final spots in the 64-golfer knockout stage, popping on either side of the cut line until it settled at 4-over 144, leaving the Hanover High and Dartmouth College graduate a stroke outside.

Williamson shared 67th place in his final amateur event. Russell, this summer’s New England Amateur and Vermont Amateur champion, was in a deadlock for 88th place in the 312-golfer field.

Seventeen competitors tied for the final 15 match-play slots after qualifying concluded and will return to The Country Club’s 14th hole to play off for a spot at 7 a.m. today. Keene High graduate Chelso Barrett, the losing finalist at the 2011 U.S. Junior Am, was the only one of five Granite Staters in the field to advance into today’s matches, tying for 27th at 2-over 142.

Vt. Women’s Am Postponed

Manchester, Vt. — A day filled with rain led the Vermont State Women’s Golf Association to cancel the first day of its state amateur championship at Manchester Country Club on Tuesday and reduce the competition from 54 holes to 45.

The field of 65 golfers will play 27 holes today, starting at 7:30 a.m., and another 18 on Thursday to determine a champion. Former touring pro Holly Reynolds, of Morristown’s Copley Country Club, is the defending champion.

The tournament includes a slew of Quechee Club competitors (Patricia DeCaire, Shelly Yusko, Madison Lyford, Susan Madeiros, Jo Allsop, Sue Fox) along with Meriden’s Kathy Allbright, who plays out of Green Mountain National Golf Course in Killington.
