Vermont Dismantles New Hampshire in Tourney Quarters

Guilderland, n.y. — Brian Voelkel recorded a triple-double, 10 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists, in top-seeded Vermont’s 77-60 victory over No. 8 New Hampshire on Saturday in the America East tournament quarterfinals.

His feat was a first in America East tournament history.

Regular season champion Vermont (22-9) was led by Candon Rusin and Clancy Rugg with 15 apiece. Sandro Carissimo and Luke Apfeld had 12 each for the Catamounts.

Vermont has won 11 straight and 18 of its last 19 games.

New Hampshire (6-24) was paced by Patrick Konan with 19 points. Jordon Bronner had 14 and Daniel Dion 10. The Wildcats were eliminated by Vermont for the second straight year.

Vermont held a 21-5 advantage in second chance points after outrebounding New Hampshire 40-19. The Catamounts made 21 of 27 free throws, while New Hampshire made just 10 of 13.

The Catamounts will play Albany in the semifinals today a rematch of last year’s title game. The fourth-seeded Great Danes (16-14) crushed Maryland-Baltimore County 86-56 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Northeastern 90, Drexel 81

Baltimore — Scott Eatherton scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as fifth-seeded Northeastern (11-20) beat fourth-seeded Drexel 90-81 in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.

Northeastern will play top-seeded Delaware in the semifinals today.

BU 91, Army 70

Boston — D.J. Irving scored 20 points and Maurice Watson added 10 points with 17 assists as No. 1 seed Boston University crushed fifth-seeded Army in the Patriot League tournament semifinal.

The Terriers (24-9) advanced to the Patriot League final, where they’ll face American.

American 57, Holy Cross 46

Washington — Jesse Reed scored 18 points and American University advanced to the Patriot League championship game, coming from behind to beat Holy Cross.

Stony Brook 80, Maine 54

Guilderland, n.y. — Conference Player of the Year Jameel Warney scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds as No. 2 Stony Brook crushed seventh-seeded Maine in the America East tournament quarterfinals.

Ivy League

Harvard 98, Brown 93 (ot)

Providence, r.i. — Laurent Rivard, who finished with 18 points, hit a 3-point jumper with 37 seconds remaining in overtime to secure a Harvard victory.

Sean McGonagill made a 3-point shot with 16 seconds left in overtime to close to 95-93, but Siyani Chambers answered with a layup and Wesley Saunders added a free throw to end the scoring.

Steve Moundou-Missi led Harvard (26-4, 13-1) with 21 points and Saunders had 19.

King had a career-high 27points and McGonagill added 26 for Brown (15-13, 7-7).

Princeton 74, Columbia 64

New York — T.J. Bray scored 25 points and Princeton ran away from Columbia for its fourth win in a row.

Princeton (19-8, 7-6 Ivy) led Columbia (19-12, 8-6) by as many as 11 points in the first half and settled for a 32-24 lead at the break after holding the Lions to just four points in the final 5:24 of the period.

The Tigers can move into a tie for third place in the Ivy League with a victory over Penn in its final regular season game on Tuesday.

Penn 69, Cornell 65

Ithaca, n.y. — Dau Jok scored 21 points — including 15 in the first half — and grabbed seven rebounds as Pennsylvania hung on to prevail over Cornell.

Miles Jackson-Cartwright had 15 points, five assists and five rebounds for the Quakers (8-19, 5-8, Ivy League).

Fran Dougherty added 14 points and five rebounds.

Nolan Cressler led the Big Red (2-26, 1-13) with 28 points and five rebounds.
