New Dartmouth College President Phil Hanlon made his Big Green football practice debut Monday, unobtrusively meeting and greeting groups of players and coaches on the periphery of the Memorial Field workout.

Whereas Hanlon’s predecessor, Jim Kim, was an avid football fan who would visit several practices per year, chuck passes to Dartmouth players while there and even embrace them on the sidelines during games, the current president was more understated.

“It really was pretty cool,” said coach Buddy Teevens, who has previoulsy worked at places like Tulane, Illinois, Florida and Stanford. “He came down in a (Dartmouth) golf shirt and a sweatshirt with his hat on. He didn’t really want to make a big deal of it, which I appreciated. I just said, ‘Well how about if we just walk around and meet the guys?’

“And it wasn’t just a show up and disappear. He was out for half the practice. He has such a wonderful way with people and just made the guys feel right at ease. Most places I worked, we never saw the president.”
