Newport Coach Steps Down
Newport — Citing personal reasons, Newport High girls basketball coach Dave Muzzey has resigned.
Newport Athletic Director Doug Beaupre said he was caught by surprise when told by Muzzey, who began coaching the team last season and was 0-2 early in the 2013-14 campaign. He also coached the Kearsarge golf team this fall.
“I didn’t see this coming,” said Beaupre.
The resignation will take effect on Dec. 20.
Beaupre said that the team will have tri-coaches for the rest of the season, with Samantha Hemingway and Tim Spanos coaching the team.
“I don’t know if tri-coaches is going to work, but we’re going to try it,” said Beaupre. “You may not see all three of us there all the time, but someone will be around.”
Beaupre has coached the girls before, winning a state championship in 2007, when Hemingway was a sophomore who went on to score 1,000 points. Hemingway graduated from Keene State College and is currently works at the Newport Recreation Department. Spanos, a long-time faculty member at Newport High School, once coached the junior varsity boys.
