Dartmouth Pulls Away From Kentucky

Columbia, s.c. — The Dartmouth men’s soccer team scored a late insurance goal in the second half to hold off Kentucky 3-1 in the first game of the South Carolina Tournament on Friday night.

The Big Green (3-0-2) scored early in the contest, capitalizing on a corner kick opportunity set by junior Stefan Defregger. The set piece volleyed to the boot of junior Colin Heffron from 10 yards out for his first of the season in the 13th minute.

Although the Big Green led 1-0 at the half, the Wildcats held a 9-3 advantage in shots. Dartmouth’s Stefan Cleveland made two stops in the half.

Following a Kentucky (2-3) corner kick, the Big Green sent the ball downfield, allowing a cross into the box from Alberto Gorini to Gabe Stauber in the 52nd minute.

Kentucky crept back into the contest with a goal in the 69th minute by Isak Krogstad.

Ten minutes later, Dartmouth added an insurance goal off the foot of freshman Alexander Marsh.

Cleveland made five saves for Dartmouth. UK outshot Dartmouth 17-8 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Dartmouth will take on the host Gamecocks on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Jamaica, n.y. — Dartmouth settled for a draw with St. John’s (6-1-1) despite a season-high 14 shots on goal.

Dartmouth (1-3-1) had many opportunities, peppering Red Storm keeper Diana Poulin. The visiting Big Green finished the first half with 12 shots on goal, including close shots by Chrissy Lozier, Emma Brush and Jackie Friedman.

Friedman had the best chance to score in the 40th minute on a free kick just outside the box as her blast dinged off the post.

Dartmouth keeper Tatiana Saunders made eight saves.

In the overtime periods, St. John’s held a 7-3 advantage in shots.

Dartmouth will head back home to take on Maine on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Burnham Field.

Big Green at Duels

Hanover — Dartmouth split a pair of matches during the first day of the Dartmouth Duels at Leede Arena.

In the tournament opener, the Big Green (6-3) topped Rhode Island, 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 26-24) thanks to a balanced offensive attack that saw four players register seven or more kills. In the nightcap, the Big Green was swept for the first time this season as Connecticut won, 3-0.

Against URI, Dartmouth’s Kaira Lujan tallied eight kills and a .438 attack percentage, and freshman Molly Kornfeind led the attack with nine kills. Stacey Benton dished out 28 assists for Dartmouth while Paige Caridi and Holly Harper added 19 and 15 digs, respectively.

The Big Green wraps up the Dartmouth Duels today against New Hampshire and Minnesota, ranked No 9 in the nation.

Bristol, r.i. — Colby-Sawyer (2-4) was doubled up by Roger Williams (4-3).

Ashlyn Ramsay and Oxana Tkachenko were the Chargers’ singles winners, and the duo of Elizabeth Lincoln and Ramsay won in doubles.

Dartmouth Competes
At Yale Event

New Haven, Conn. — Dartmouth had a strong showing on the opening day of the Ivy Plus Championships on Friday at Yale. All 10 members of the squad saw action, highlighted by Sam Todd and George Wall with 2-0 records in the tournament.

The Big Green continues the event today, as both Todd and Wall look to advance.

Bristol, r.i. — Colby-Sawyer (1-1) rolled past Roger Williams (0-1) for its first win of the season.

Nathan Taschereau, Clay Allen, Sergio Spassof, Cass McCann, Myles Utell and Justin Pinard won as the Chargers swept their singles matches. Colby-Sawyer’s Dean Boodakian and Spassof won in doubles.
