D’Agostino Named Athlete of the Meet
Cambridge, Mass. — Another day, another meet record.
Less than 24 hours after breaking the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal record in the 5000m, Dartmouth junior Abbey D’Agostino smashed the meet record in the women’s mile Sunday at Harvard’s Good Track as part of the league’s 2013 championship.
D’Agostino ran a 4:32.42, eclipsing the old mark by more than 11 seconds in the process. Five competitors in the race bested the old meet record set in 2006, but it was the Big Green’s D’Agostino who smashed the mark as she finished more than eight seconds ahead of the second-place runner from Columbia.
For her efforts, D’Agostino was named the Female Track Athlete of the Meet.
But despite D’Agostino’s efforts, Harvard ended up taking the title for the first time since 2000. Dartmouth finished fifth with 72 points.
In addition to D’Agostino’s title in the mile, freshman Kaitlin Whitehorn won her own individual crown in the high jump, clearing 5-10.5/1.79m, giving her the Heps title as well as setting a Dartmouth record in the process.
Freshman Mollie Gribbin broke the 60m school record in the finals, posting a 7.64 to finish in fourth place. Gribbin broke her own school mark in the 60m on Saturday afternoon with a 7.70 in her preliminary heat.
Gribbin was also fourth in the triple jump with a 39-10.5/12.15m leap.
Men Take 6th at Indoor Heps
Cambridge, Mass. — In the men’s meet, Dartmouth finished sixth with 38.50 points as Cornell edged Princeton by one point for the team title, 157-156.
The Big Green’s best showing on Sunday came from its distance medley relay team The DMR claimed second in 9:53.57, finishing less than a second behind Princeton (9:52.72).
In the weight throw, Lebanon’s Dom Filiano’s first attempt of the day stood up as his best. His measured toss of 52-4.0/15.95m earned him a sixth-place finish.
