UVM Sinks Maryland-Baltimore Country for 4th Straight Win

Baltimore — Clancy Rugg posted his third double-double in six games and Vermont topped America East Conference-foe Maryland-Baltimore County 67-55 yesterday for its fourth straight win.

Rugg, once a walk-on player for the Catamounts, had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his eighth straight start. Trey Blue tallied 16 points, Luke Apfled added 13 and Brian Voelkel had a season-high 16 rebounds for Vermont, which controlled the boards 42-27.

UMBC (6-18, 4-7) drew the game to an early 4-4 tie but missed its next four shots as Vermont pulled ahead 13-4. Blue’s 3-pointer followed by a free throw gave the Catamounts a commanding 27-11 advantage.

Vermont (16-7, 9-2) outshot UMBC 41 percent (19 of 46) to 38 percent (20 of 52) but its real advantage came at the charity stripe, where the Catamounts made 23 shots compared to eight for the Retrievers.

Norfolk, Va. — Joel Smith scored 27 points and teamed with Jonathan Lee to hit late foul shots to give Northeastern (16-8, 11-1 CAA) an overtime victory against Old Dominion.

Maine 66, Albany (N.Y.) 52

Orono, Maine — Justin Edwards led Maine (9-15, 4-7 America East) with 16 points in a victory over Albany.

UMass 80, Saint Joseph’s 62

Amherst, Mass. — Terrell Vinson had a game-high 18 points to power Massachusetts (15-6, 5-3 Atlantic 10) past Saint Joseph’s in an Atlantic 10 matchup.

Lehigh 68, Holy Cross 61

Worcester, Mass. — Mackey McKnight made a season-high 11 free throws in 12 attempts and scored 22 points to help Lehigh kick off the second half of its Patriot League schedule with a win over Holy Cross.

BU 79, Binghamton 58

Vestal, n.y. — D.J. Irving scored 22 of his 27 points in the first half, made a career-high seven 3-pointers and Boston University defeated Binghamton for the eighth straight time.

Ivy League

Yale 69, Princeton 65

Princeton, n.j. — Javier Duren scored 13 points and Yale snapped Princeton’s six-game winning streak.

Austin Morgan and Sam Martin each scored 11 points for the Bulldogs (9-14, 3-3 Ivy League), who have won two consecutive games.

Princeton (11-8, 4-1) also had its 21-game home Ivy League winning streak snapped. It was the program’s longest since winning 26 in a row from 1996-99.

Yale went into halftime with a 34-26 lead, but the Tigers were able to keep the game close in the second half. A 3-pointer by Princeton’s Will Barrett tied the game at 53-all with 6:55 left in the game.

Nick Victor put the Bulldogs ahead by two points, 55-53, after he made two free throws with 6:20 remaining. After Victor’s free throws, Yale did not trail the rest of the way — even though Princeton cut the deficit to one point on two occasions.
