Hartford, Conn. — Ryan Boatright scored 19 points and the Connecticut men avoided an upset last night, holding off New Hampshire 61-53 in a game that was close most of the way.

Omar Calhoun added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies (6-1).

Ferg Myrick led all scorers with 20 points. Chris Pelcher added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats (2-4)

Connecticut never trailed and was up by 11 with 1:42 left.

But Jordon Bronner cut the lead to six points on a 3-point shot off a Niels Giffey turnover with 1:22 left. A UConn shot-clock violation led to a layup by Pelcher that made it 57-53 with just 36 seconds left.

But New Hampshire was forced to foul, and Boatright and Calhoun made their free throws as UConn hung on for the win.

New Hampshire came into the game off consecutive losses to Bryant, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Holy Cross, and UConn, which was ranked No. 21 before losing to New Mexico last week, was heavily favored.

It looked like it was going to be an easy win for the Huskies early.

Notre Dame 64, No. 8 Kentucky 50

South Bend, Ind. — Eric Atkins scored 16 points and Notre Dame beat No. 8 Kentucky for its 41st victory in the past 42 home games.

NBA

Heat 105, Spurs 100

Miami — The NBA plans to make San Antonio pay for resting four stars.

The Heat almost could not.

Ray Allen’s 3-pointer with 22.6 seconds left gave the Heat the lead, LeBron James finished with 23 points and the Heat rallied late to beat the Spurs last night — needing to dig deep despite San Antonio’s decision to have four standouts resting at home in a move that irked NBA Commissioner David Stern.

Allen scored 20 points, Dwyane Wade added 19 and Chris Bosh finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for Miami, now 7-0 at home.

Gary Neal had 20 points for the Spurs, who played without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green.

The Spurs’ top foursome was sent back to San Antonio by coach Gregg Popovich, who said the move was in his team’s best interest. Stern wasn’t happy about it, calling the move “unacceptable” and saying that sanctions against the Spurs will be forthcoming.

Tiago Splitter scored 18 points, Nando De Colo added 15, Boris Diaw scored 12 and Concord native Matt Bonner had a 10-point, 10-rebound night for San Antonio, which finished a six-games-in-nine-nights road trip with a 5-1 record.
