Local Roundup: Grantham’s Russell Shoots 76 At U.S. Amateur

Atlanta — Grantham’s Evan Russell shot a 76 at the first day of the U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday in Atlanta.

Russell, winner of the last two Vermont Amateur titles, shot a 40 on the front nine on the Atlanta Athletic Club’s par-71 Highlands Course and a 36 on the back nine.

The KUA graduate was recently featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” section.

Jimmy Beck and British teenager Sam Horsfield shared the lead at 6-under-par after the first round of stroke play qualifying.

Beck, from Columbus, Ga., had a 65 on the Highlands Course and Horsfield shot 66 on the par-72 Riverside Course.

The field of 312 players will be cut to 64 after today’s round.

The format then switches to match play on Wednesday, leading up to the championship on Sunday.

Dartmouth Hosts Event Tonight

Hanover — The Big Green football team, coaching staff and their wives will host “Dartmouth Football 101,” a crash course on college football, tonight from 6-9 at Memorial Field.

The event is free and includes activities for the entire family. The first 100 attendees age 18 and older will receive a free Dartmouth football T-shirt, while the first 250 children will be treated to a free mini-football.

Other highlights of the event include a tailgate party, on-field skill stations run by the Dartmouth football staff and a football-themed fashion show featuring student-athletes, coaches, wives and young fans wearing game-day gear, and the unveiling of the team’s brand-new 2014 uniforms.

A demonstration and Q&A session with a rules official and kids activities (flag football, bounce house, poster making) are also featured.

Attendees are encouraged to wear sneakers and casual clothing in anticipation of light on-field activities.

Parking is available in the Thompson Arena Lot. From there, cross South Park Street (Route 120) and follow signs for registration inside Memorial Field’s northeast gate.

All activities will take place on Memorial Field and inside Floren Varsity House weather permitting (rain location: Leverone Field House).

Legion Baseball

Mass. Team Wins Jr. Title

Manchester — Braintree, Mass., took the Junior Northeast Regional title Monday, beating host Dover, 5-4. Braintree won the game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the consolation game, Tolland, Conn., defeated Riverside, R.I.

The tournament played host to five state champions and three runners-up.
